MHS rolls out new clear bag policy tonight

Aug 20, 2023

Maricopa High School has a new policy in place this year impacting those who plan to attend tonight’s football game.

The high school is upping safety efforts at its sporting events, banning opaque bags and a list of other items. The district first introduced a clear bag policy at Desert Sunrise High School last year.

As one might expect by the name, clear bags are approved, as well as smaller items like a wallet and wristlet, Maricopa Unified School District said in a statement today.

Backpacks, purses, tote bags, drawstring bags and camera bags are prohibited. Computers, selfie sticks and video cameras were banned too.

Medical bag access is available at secure entrances.

“Our top priority is the safety and security of our students, staff and visitors,” said Assistant Superintendent Tracey Pastor.

Pastor said the new clear bag policy at Maricopa High is one of many “layers” in the district’s approach to ensure “a secure environment for everyone.”

MUSD has been working toward improving school safety, like funding the installation of metal detectors and improving police presence in schools.

Maricopa kicks off against McClintock tonight at 7 p.m. at home.
